For the second consecutive year, Tegra Medical placed first in the 2024 SFS Value Engineering Award competition. The competition is a group-wide initiative that promotes innovation and improvement across all SFS Group divisions. The Tegra Medical project team attained the top spot competing against 30 other entries in the competition.

SFS CEO Jens Breu, and Mike Treleaven, Sr. VP of Engineering for Tegra Medical, presented the award to the project team in Franklin, MA. Recognizing their efforts, Jens said: “To everyone involved in this project, thank you for your vision, dedication, and collaborative spirit. Your work directly impacts patients’ lives and highlights Tegra Medical’s role as a trusted partner in life-changing medical device manufacturing.”

Representing the SFS Medical Division, Tegra Medical’s project focused on manufacturing improvements to tissue shavers, a fast-growing segment of the medical device industry. Tissue shavers are minimally invasive instruments that enhance precision in the removal of abnormal tissues in different areas of the human body, including bone and soft tissue.

The Tegra Medical project team developed an automated manufacturing solution for tissue shavers that realized efficiency gains, labor and cost savings, increased production output and improvements to device performance and reliability—all of which create value for tissue shaver customers.

The project team’s work will position Tegra Medical to capitalize on opportunities in the rapidly evolving tissue shaver market. The arthroscopic segment alone was valued at $1.96 billion in 2024 and is growing at a 6.5% CAGR, driven by an aging population and the rise of minimally invasive surgical procedures.[i]

The SFS Value Engineering Award Competition is held annually and is open to all companies within the SFS Group worldwide. The goal of the competition is to identify the best realized innovation, best digital innovation, or best production application or improvement among the projects submitted for consideration.

Entries are judged based on value creation through improvements in functionality and sustainability, as well as reduced costs, revenue growth and margin optimization. Judging also considers speed of deployment, diversity of thought and inclusion, and potential future applications.
